Tawang has a rich history as it was an important part of Buddhist heritage. It is believed that sixth Dalai Lama was born in Tawang. There are innumerable number of monasteries and nunneries in Tawang. Some historian believe this town was a part of former kingdom of Tibet, though there is lot of contradiction. There is a dispute between India and China over this area. This was one of the main reason for the 1962 Indo-China war.

This place is specially popular as religious centre of Mahayana sect of Buddhism. Tawang Ganden Namgyal Lhaste famously known as Tawang gompa or monastery is the most famous attractions of Tawang. This monastery is more than 400 years old and was built in the 17th century by Mera Lama who was a contemporary of 5th Dalai Lama. This monastery is adorned with huge scriptures, books, images, tapestries and gold littered Buddhist sculptures. Popular Parkhang hall of this monastery has a library which houses rare hand-written and block-painted thankas or manuscripts of revered Buddhist books like Tangun, Kangyur and Sungbhum.

The 18 ft high statue of lord Buddha which adorned this monastery is a great sight to watch. Urqelling Monastery which is the birth place of 6th Dalai Lama is an important tourist attraction. There are many more monasteries and nunneries which are worth visiting while being in Tawang. Nature god has been very kind to this place. Landscapes of Tawang is absolutely enchanting filled with towering snow covered mountain and green forest. Sela Lake is a very popular tourist spot of this beautiful town. Tawang is an ideal place for various adventure sports activities like river-rafting, rock climbing, paragliding and various winter sports activities.
